Memory, public life and a longer process of reflection.
Strada della Memoria is a proposal to renew the main route through Borgo Ticino as a living place of remembrance, learning and care.
It responds to the massacre of 13 August 1944, when Nazi-fascist violence devastated the town and left a lasting mark on families and the wider community. The project builds on the work of witnesses, victims’ relatives, historians and the legal processes that later established responsibility for these crimes.
The route would link the town’s entrance, historic centre and key sites of memory through planting, sculpture and interpretive markers. Twelve flowering pear trees would remember the twelve people executed by firing squad, while gardens, Corten-steel totems and panels would tell the stories of the victims, the resistance, those who tried to help, and the long work of testimony and justice.
A new sculpture by Jacob Lucius Cartwright and collaborators would honour the two partisans killed in Borgo Ticino. Further elements would remember Piera Bucelloni, Maria Garbarini Gavinelli, Clara Mosseri, Giovanni Fanchini and many others whose lives and courage remain part of the town’s history.
The intention is not only to preserve the past. Strada della Memoria proposes a more welcoming and beautiful public space, where historical understanding, community life and care for the landscape can grow together.
